Students and faculty meet with Iraqi journalists on campus to share history, ideas, and a vision for the future.

… many of my stories from 2011 were lost when the J-School updated their website. Once they’re back up I’ll update this page. In the meantime, check out some of the stories I’ve written in the last few months (today is March 5, 2012) and some, interestingly, that I wrote way back in 2009.

Thanks to Jordan for the push to update my blog!

I also plan to do more regular updating now that I have a bit more time on my hands.

This morning my neighbor was loading her cat carrier, heavy with singing/scared/angry cat, onto the top of her bicycle basket.

At the Safeway pharmacy this afternoon, a conversation with the pharmacy tech:

Tech: “Are you aware of the price for the Humalog?”

Me: “Yeah. Whaddaya got? It’s usually sixty-something.”

Tech: “Yeah. $66.08. That’s really expensive!”

Me: “Well, it’s either that or die!”

Tech: “That’s so sad!” I didn’t mean to upset her!

Me: “Well, I could also be living in a cardboard box in a third world country.”

Tech: “That’s true. The glass is half full!”

Me: “Sometimes I’m mad about it, but other times, it’s okay.”

The truth is it was not okay last month, when I couldn’t afford the $66 co-pay. It was not okay when I had to ask a friend to lend me the money so I could live, basically. It was a humiliating experience. I read recently that there is currently no generic brand of insulin because it is a biologic. Makes total sense to me!

In the Safeway parking lot: two girls, each struggling to carry a 24-pack of Keystone light; one of them saying: “we are such alcoholics.” She had humor in her voice, but they didn’t laugh.

Tonight as I walked Elliott, the neighborhood smelled like marijuana, barbecue, car exhaust, and damp earth.

Job hunt

leave a comment »

I’ve recently graduated with a Master of Science in Journalism/Literary Nonfiction from the Literary Nonfiction Program at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication in Eugene, OR and I’m looking for a full-time writing and or editing job. I’m also available for contract work, and I am open to other types of work as well.

I’d love to stay in Eugene, but I know the job market here is somewhat saturated with educated folks. This means I’m open to relocating to Portland. I really love Oregon and don’t really want to leave.

Know of any opportunities in the area? Want to hire me for a writing/editing/proofreading/transcription/tutoring/anything project? Let me know! You can find my contact information on the About page.
